Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe. Proverbs 29:25 NIV
As I walked through the door of my daughter’s home, her 8-month old, Elsie, sat contentedly on the floor surrounded by several small toys, one of which was an empty Kleenex box. A huge smile spread across her face as I spoke her name and our eyes met. She held out her tiny arms to me in total trust. She knew her Mimi!
Elsie is protected right now. She hasn’t faced comparison with others. Her looks, talents and abilities have not been held up to a measuring stick. She hasn’t been hurt by the sting of rejection or condemnation because she doesn’t fit a certain standard of perfection. This will come because it is the world’s way!
Slowly, as layer upon layer of these messages are received and perceived, people have different ways of coping. Many times invisible walls are constructed as a means of guarding a fragile heart. Often a person becomes a perfectionist in an effort to please others or to control their world.
Fear of failure, rejection or condemnation can paralyze and imprison causing inaction, withdrawal or constant anxiety.
The absence of fear is a place of rest, contentment and peace. God’s Word assures us as His followers that we can have that, even as adults who have faced the many harsh elements thrown to us by life. It is possible when we are able to humble ourselves, submit and totally trust in our Savior’s love. Perfect love drives out fear.
Elsie knows me. She knows my voice, my touch and the safe caress of my arms. I am able to meet her needs for food, comfort, safety and a dry little rump.
I have proven trustworthy; therefore she’s helpless, dependent and at peace in my care.
