Good morning Lord. We sing praises to Your name this day and pray that You would sit with us and fill us with Your peace and love. Speak directly to our hearts today as we meditate on Your infallible Word. We love You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!
Although sources vary some, I think we can all agree that it takes somewhere between 21 and 30 days to create a new habit. You just completed your twenty-first day.
So what are your new habits?
This is a point in time where you will find yourself at a fork in the road. You might be riding on a high. You’re psyched because you are living the life with your heart on fire; your mind is an amazing weapon for truth; and your body is a beautiful reflection of your heart. Suh-weet!
Remember to continue to celebrate throughout your entire journey.
But that might not be your story. What if you are closer to your goals, but your find yourself sabotaging your own hard efforts? For no good reason you’ll find yourself at a drive thru ordering food that you know isn’t worth the calories; you feel God calling you to an intimate date but you turn to your to-do list instead; your mind is obsessing over the uncontrollable factors in your life even though you know this thought process will get you nowhere.
Why does this happen?
There are so many reasons.
Let’s revisit a foundational truth: we are living in a world at war. We have an enemy. He is dead set on using manipulative schemes in order to get you off course. You are designed to be a bright light for God and you are a threat to the enemy’s dark world.
With that, here are thoughts that the enemy can lodge in your mind:
You are selfish and self-consumed. Why aren’t you using this time to take care of your family?
If you continue to improve yourself, there will be greater expectations placed on you and you won’t be strong enough to handle that.
If you lose weight or break out of your family’s dysfunctional ways, you will create unwanted attention from others. You won’t have a security blanket to protect you.
Your new ways make others feel worse about themselves. When you lose weight or mature emotionally and spiritually, it makes your friends’ and family members’ unhealthy ways more noticeable. You were created to be a rescuer, remember? No one should feel bad on your account. You need to “rescue” them from these feelings of inadequacy by not going beyond a certain point of weight loss, mental growth or spiritual maturity.
Yes, these thoughts can come in. But it’s your choice whether or not you’ll admit the source (which is not God, and it’s not you… it’s the enemy). It’s also your choice whether or not to make agreements with the lies.
Don’t fall into the trap and sabotage your own hard efforts!
Understand that, at this very moment, there is a battle waging for your heart, mind and body. You’ve already seen what the enemy’s lies can look like. Remember that the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy.
Think about each of those words. Each one is vicious. Each has deadly intent. This is not hypothetical… this is your life. On the other hand, Jesus came to not only give you life, but He wants you to have it to the full.
The prophets spoke on behalf of God. Isaiah is generally said to be the greatest of the prophets. So when we read his words, we are reading God’s words to us.
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners… …and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.
Are you “poor” in your heart, mind or body?
Do you feel brokenhearted?
Is any insecurity, addiction or frustration making you feel like a captive prisoner?
Would you like to trade your ashes for beauty… your mourning for gladness… your despair for praise?
This is the life God intends for you. YOU are worth the efforts. YOU are worth fighting for. If you have fallen short of creating new habits, have no fear. Literally, have no fear!
Shake off your dust; rise up, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion.
Page through the past 21 days either in this book or in your journal.
Mark the areas which spoke loudest to your own story.
Revisit those truths and present your struggles to God.
Shake your dust off.
Rise up and sit enthroned.
Free yourself from the chains around your neck.
Jesus came to free the captives and that means YOU. You are worth this life Jesus died to give you.
Let His words sink deep into your heart.
Get back on track if you need to.
Celebrate the fact that God celebrates when His prodigal comes back home.
You are good enough, you are smart enough and doggone it, people like you!
Precious Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son which allows us to come boldly before the throne of Grace and ask anything that we wish. We pray, Lord that You will help us to become doers of Your Word and not just readers or listeners. Transform us Lord, from the inside out. Come and reside in our hearts and guide us in all that we do. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
