Day 20

Excerpts from Transformation by Truth: 30 Days to a Healthy Heart, Mind and Body by Noelle Dey © 2012

Coffee Talk for Tuesday, February 3, 2015

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Noelle Dey

Blessing:

Oh Lord, today let this time be only about You. Let Your words infiltrate my mind. May Your spirit silence any and all distractions. Transform me Lord. I ask these things in Jesus name, amen.

Scripture Reference:

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

Ephesians 1:18-19

Today’s Message:

When my Mom got her initial cancer diagnosis, the statistics said she would live somewhere between nine months to a year. By God’s loving grace and by the brilliance of Dr. Barth, she survived her battle six-and-a-half years. I remember people telling me back then, “You should be so grateful you had your Mom for so long!” Were they right? Yes. Well, kind of.

Although she and I had our differences, this was my Mom… the one who was supposed to be the first to greet us in the airport when we brought Sierra home from China... the lady who would have found immense joy in her granddaughter and would have baked her homemade chocolate chip cookies… the grandma who would have spoiled Sierra with gifts and so many sweets I’d roll my eyes in disbelief … she was the one Lori and I wanted to do ladies’ lunches with and as always, each of us would fight to pay the bill.

The skies were grey and it was raining on the morning of her funeral. It seemed symbolic because I was in my own storm. A week ago my Mom had died. I was getting married in just over a month. My Dad was losing his battle to non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Although at the time, we had no idea that he would only be separated from his bride for a mere 62 days.

My quiet time seemed to be as dark and solemn as the skies. I couldn’t hear God through the numbness in my mind. I didn’t know how to reach for His hand. So instead I put my workout clothes on and headed for the gym. Once I got there I realized I forgot my iPod. To me, this is the kiss of death when I’m running on a treadmill.

“W-h-a-t-e-v-e-r! Is there anything else that could make this day worse, God?” My frustration with God fueled my run. I was on a treadmill which faced a huge window. I watched the rolling clouds as techno music pounded through my body.

And then… in the most unlikely setting… God healed my heart. Smack dab in the middle of heavy, threatening clouds, three brilliant rays of light shone through, piercing the darkness. The obnoxious booming music faded into the next song which was “I Hope You Dance,” written by Tia Sillers and Mark Sanders, sung by Lee Ann Womak.

It was truly the last song that you’d ever hear in a gym. As I listened closely to the lyrics, I heard the wisdom that both my tender, loving Lord and my deeply missed Mom would have whispered in my ear:

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

You get your fill to eat

But always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted

God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small

When you stand beside the ocean

Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens

Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Never settle for the path of least resistance

Living might mean taking chances

But they’re worth taking

Loving might be a mistake

But it’s worth making

Don’t let some hell bent heart

Leave you bitter

When you come close to selling out

Reconsider

Give the heavens above

More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

I’m not one who has ever audibly heard God’s voice, nor has He ever communicated with me through visions. But at that most precious, intimate moment, I had a picture in my mind of my Mom with her arms stretched out, her eyes facing toward the sun, twirling in circles dancing.

It was the perfect visual because at every party, she was the first one on the dance floor. And by the way, you would have been second because she would have inevitably grabbed your hand and led you to the dance floor whether she knew you or not.

The magnitude of her restoration was wonderfully healing. The last time I saw her, her tiny body must’ve only weighed about 75 pounds. She had been sick for what felt like ages. But now, she is complete! She is dancing! I will never stop replaying that scene in my mind until I reunite with her in heaven.

APPLICATIONS

Heart:

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Ephesians 1:18-21

My heart leaps when I read, “the eyes of your heart.”

What does this mean to you?

Paul addresses those of us who believe. Look at the sequence of events that occur when the eyes of our hearts are enlightened: we will have the knowledge of hope, an understanding of riches which are our inheritance and we will comprehend the incomparably great power that we have living in us.

And… it’s not reserved for heaven, after our time on earth is over… but it’s also for the “present age.” We are talking about the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. We can have all of this now!

During the last months before my Mom died, “the eyes of my heart” were heavy. They held visions of her failing body writhed in pain. Although I knew of the reality of heaven… at least, I tried to grasp the concept occasionally… the visions of my scrawny, frail, jaundiced Mom plagued my soul. It wasn’t until that life-changing morning of her funeral when I began to let God enlighten the eyes of my heart.

By faith, I removed the visions of her that haunted me and I replaced them with the perfect illustration of her twirling and dancing. The old visuals I held onto were what her life used to be. They were past-tense. The here and now is completely different. I began my journey of seeing with the eyes of my heart guided by God’s truths. My Mom is dancing!

In your journal, write your own reflections.

What do the “eyes of your heart” see?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Inevitably your life has been scarred with your own heartache.

What do your deepest pains look like?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

How can you let God enlighten those destructive pictures?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

What do God’s inspired, truth filled images look like?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Ask God in prayer what the hope is that He is calling you to.

What are the riches He is giving to you by His glorious inheritance?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

How can you harness His incomparably great power and live this life which will continue through eternity?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Take the time, not just this moment—but from here on, to carefully seek His answers.

Each time you uncover another piece of your unique puzzle, add it to your journal.

Mind:

There was a time when I was challenged to approach my life’s goals as if I were writing a screenplay. This concept encouraged me to visualize the story I desired. Once I saw it in my mind, I was able to play my role and live the adventure.

How can you apply this to your life?

I used to take a boot camp class at the gym. I loved how the exercises were based on basic athletic drills since I stick out like a sore thumb in the classes that have any amount of choreography. Unfortunately the instructor quit and the class got cancelled.

I used to complain to Ryan each time I’d come home from the gym after another subpar workout. He told me that I should become an instructor and teach the class myself. I tried to explain how I was nothing like the instructors at the gym. I had no musicality and I didn’t have the right look. Ryan continued to encourage me, telling me that I could do it.

After a while, I started to believe him. So I began to daydream. I pictured myself coaching my own boot camp class. In my mind, I could see the drills. I pictured the athletes doing their pushups. I could see them running sprint drills.

But I also wanted to integrate life coaching and motivational speaking. I created a unique story which I hadn’t seen in any other fitness class. Once I wrote that script in my mind, I took the steps needed so I could play my role. I earned my certifications to be a group fitness instructor and a professional life coach. I got experience by teaching at a large gym chain. From there, I partnered with the city where I live and created my own boot camp company.

Write down one goal that you want to focus on now.

_____________________________________________________________________

Use your imagination to create your story.

Who else will be costarring in your play?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Think about how it feels emotionally.

What do you look like physically?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Does your day-to-day life look different than it is now?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

After you write your screenplay, it will be time to engineer it into reality.

What resources do you need?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Have you read books on the subject?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Should you use Google to seek out practical instructions?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Do you know someone who has had success that you can contact for advice?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Write your story and enjoy every second of playing your part!

Body:

My Dad was ahead of his time. That was the good news. The bad news: I had no idea how amazing he was. Before I was ten years old, he used to make me shoot free throws in my mind.

While my teammates would goof around on the basketball courts, my Dad would tell me, “Shoot 100 in your mind. Watch the ball swoosh through the net. If it nicks the rim, start again. Nothing but net.” Sometimes I’d do it. Other times I would close my eyes and wonder when I could turn the Atari on again (think Xbox 360 with none of the cool capabilities). I was a pretty good free throw shooter. And that was using about 50 percent of my potential!

Now that I am a coach, what do I tell my clients? Visualize, visualize, visualize! When they can picture themselves with their end results… down to every detail of muscle definition… when they can watch themselves in their minds doing an exercise like they are watching a movie and they are in the starring role, I can literally see them move faster and with more power.

The thing is, our bodies react similarly whether the experiences we have are in our minds or if they are actually happening.

In your workouts, play your own movie in your mind.

See yourself doing your exercises successfully.

Picture yourself with the muscle definition you desire. Feel the emotional momentum as well.

That starts the snowball effect. When using these techniques, you’ll move faster and exert more power physically. That will result in more calories burned and you will create stronger, leaner muscles. That will lead to increased self-confidence. Confidence begets success.

What would your fitness and nutrition look like if we were watching a movie called, “A Day in the Life of the Unstoppable Athlete (Enter Your Name)”?

Before you gear up for your workout and before you eat clean today, write that desired vision in your journal and see it in your mind’s eyes. Don’t miss a single detail.

Closing Prayer:

Precious Heavenly Father, Author and Perfecter of our faith… Lord You have called whosoever will to take their place in Your perfect plan. The one You’ve prepared for each one of us in advance. You know the steps we need to make it through all You have planned for us. I pray that You would reveal to us the areas of our life that need to be changed, and help us make the necessary adjustments. Oh Lord, I want my life story to mirror the one You wrote for me. For it’s in Jesus name I pray, amen.
