Today’s Special is: The Body: Temple of God
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Robin Jones
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV
At 43, I am becoming Real.
Like the Skin Horse said to the Velveteen Rabbit,
Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.
Except in people, it is more like your hair falls out, you get bifocals, your joints hurt and you feel shabby.
Our bodies are temporary. Job writes about humans,
They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.
Job 14:2 NIV
In 1 Corinthians 6:19, Paul explains to the Corinthians that their bodies are places of worship to God (i.e., temples). Further, our bodies are actually members of Jesus Christ himself; therefore, our body parts are to be used for good, not evil.
Worship is that which we offer to God out of love and respect. Our love and respect for our God overwhelms us when we consider that the purchase price for our shabby, temporary lives was Jesus’ violent, bloody death on the cross. He emptied himself out completely as a living, blood sacrifice for us.
Since our vessels expire, they are sacred, and they were purchased at such a high price, I have to ask… what or whom are we worshiping with our bodies?
Journal all of the things that you do with your body on an average day. Take it body part by body part.
Is each action something that would bring a smile across God’s face?
If yes, then offer God praise and glory for being able to do that.
If no, then ask God to help you. If there are sinful things you do with your body, ask Jesus for forgiveness and make a change.
Precious Heavenly Father, we worship Your Holy Name. We sing to You this day the song You have placed inside of us. We ask that You take our lives and let them be consecrated to You. Let every member of our body honor You. Let every member of Christ’s Church, His Body, honor You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Consider the words to these songs which are examples of how to worship God with your whole body… your whole life.
