Today’s Special is: Focusing on the Giver this Holiday Season
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Teske Drake
Blessed is she who believed the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.
Luke 1:45 NIV
Of all seasons out of the year, the holidays tend to be the busiest of all. There are meals to prepare, family members to visit, gifts to buy, and the list goes on. I’m guessing I don’t have to say much before the gears are turning in your own mind about all that needs to be done.
Let’s pause for a moment, place our to-do lists aside, and ponder this one simple statement, that for me, has become a mantra of sorts:
Slow it down, Jesus wears the crown.
Yes, let’s slow it down, ladies. Jesus wears the crown!
How do we do this? How do we undo what’s been done year after year after year?
We focus on the sacrificial gift, not a surplus of gifts. And when we understand the sacrifice, we open ourselves up to the many great and precious promises that God has in store for each and every one of us.
As we embark on this holiday season, there is much to learn; not only about slowing down, and sacrifice, but about promise. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the Old Testament promise of our coming Messiah. The prophet Isaiah foretells these words about our Savior,
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 NIV
King Jesus is our promised hope. He is our Messiah, born in a lowly manger and the humblest of servants. His mother, Mary, leads us by her example in embracing such a promise. When the angel, Gabriel, delivered the news to her that she would carry and birth God’s own Son, his parting words to her were,
For no word from God will ever fail.
His Word never fails; what promise!
And what of Mary’s attitude in response to this encounter?
"I am the Lord’s servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled."
Luke 1:38 NIV
Oh, to have a servant’s heart like Mary, especially during the crazy, busy holiday season! I want to respond like Mary, with a humble, holy confidence in what He can do through me, His servant, so that I can serve with joy, fully depending on God to do what only He can do!
So, I slow it down and remember that Jesus wears the crown. Jesus is the ultimate promise. Jesus is the Giver and the GIFT! Mary was called to help usher this gift into the world and Luke 1:45 declares,
Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!
Like Mary, might we be women who believe with a servant’s heart, and trust in the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Let’s slow it down, remember Who wears the crown, and allow our lives be a shining light of this Truth throughout the holiday season.
Consider the tasks that you have at hand – the gifts to buy, the events to attend, the activities to coordinate. Stop NOW and pray for the Lord to guide, direct, and bless the efforts of your hands. Confess any areas of sin that need confessed and make a commitment, in prayer, to slow it down and recognize that King Jesus wears the crown.
Heavenly Father, I ask that You keep us keenly aware of the real reason for this season. Give us strength to complete the tasks that You set before us, and to do so with joy so that as others look on, they know that we serve King Jesus. Help us to align our priorities, Lord, and give us a spirit of humility as we serve You. May our schedules – all the activities and events, the planning and the gifts – may it all reveal a glimpse of Your magnificent glory. We love You. Amen.
