Today’s Special is: Renewing Your Mind Daily with God’s Word
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Jamy Whitaker
And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Colossians 3:10 NIV
With the start of 2014 well under way I am certain that several resolutions have been made. For example, eating healthier, exercising more, and budgeting (just to name a few). What happens most of the time with these resolutions is that they end up tossed aside after a few weeks or months. This is because there hasn’t been a shedding of the old habits and the old ways of thinking, so real change is not going to occur.
The very same idea is true of our Christian walk. Being a Christian means much more than having good intentions or making resolutions. You have to take the right actions. Simply put, you have to get rid of the old and put on the new.
Once we say yes to Jesus, we desire to follow His ways because this brings us peace. You and I must daily choose to make God the center of our lives. The Bible is our tool to discover more about God and the direction He wants us to go.
This is not a one-time decision. It is part of a lifelong process. The closer we grow to Christ the more we are changed. Therefore we need to continue to learn, obey and grow. You and I cannot do this on our own. Only when the Holy Spirit renews, educates and directs our minds will we be truly transformed.
Okay, so we know that we need to spend time with God daily in His Word, but how can we practically apply this to our lives?
I would suggest that you take some time to look at the various types of devotionals and reading plans that are available. They range from apps for your phone and tablet, to print versions, as well as plans for reading through the Bible. You need to decide what will work best for you based on the season of life you are in and the type of learner you are. I personally use a combination of all of the above.
After you determine your method of reading, then you must decide what time works best. Are you an early riser or a night owl? Once the best time has been determined, you must set this time aside and guard it on your daily schedule. Finally, I would suggest finding someone to check in with to share what you are learning and how God is working through your quiet time. This person can be online or live close to you. The main purpose is for him/her to serve as an accountability partner. It will help you stay on track as you renew your mind this year and keeping God as your focus.
I challenge you to sit down today and select a book of the Bible, devotional or reading plan that interests you in this season of life. Now select a time of day that works best in your schedule. Block this time out. Guard it. I encourage you to take this challenge one step farther by having an accountability partner. This is someone that you can touch base with regarding your daily time with God and share what you are learning.
Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You today desiring to draw closer to You this year. I know that in order to accomplish all that You desire for me, I need to make the choice daily to spend time with You reading Your Word and in prayer. I pray that You will help me find the right time and reading for this season of my life. I also ask that You help me choose an accountability partner, so that I can maintain this course when the storms and chaos of life try to overwhelm my schedule and me. I long to make You the center of my life this year. I look forward to all that You have in store for me. May I shine Your light brightly to the world around me. In Jesus’ Precious Name, Amen.
