Today’s Special is: Not My Body
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Christie Davis
Main Ingredient:

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV

Entrée:

Ok… So about a month ago I started my thousandth diet since middle school.  I took vitamin diet supplements, ate ½ as much, quit the junk food, and even exercised to a workout video about 5 days a week.  I refused to check the scales.  I knew this was it.  I was doing it!  I felt better, and I just knew my clothes were fitting better.

After two solid weeks, I felt confident enough to check the scales and guess what?  0 pounds.  I was exactly the same!  My husband chose to go on a diet as well.  He checked his weight after 5 days and guess what… he’d lost 8 lbs.  After a grimaced, “that’s great honey”, can you imagine what I did next?  To help him with his efforts, I decided to finish off all the junk food in the house and at work.  Ok, maybe not for him, but I sure emptied stuff out.

Did I feel better?

Not a chance.  I felt yucky and guilty.

Was I frustrated?

Without a doubt.  However, I forgot one major factor.  That my body was not my own.

Jesus says,

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV

Can I say, “Oh my!”

What am I doing to my body?  And it doesn’t even belong to me! My heavenly Father created this body and He bought it back with a price.  Who am I to destroy it?  I may not be one who can eat raw vegetables and wheatgrass, but I can make smart decisions to take care of the body that God chose to give me.

Paul says,

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Romans 12:2 NIV

I don’t need to become a supermodel, and I don’t need to sulk or beat myself up because I am not.  Who would I rather please: God or Hollywood?  I choose not to follow the pattern of this world.  God’s knows what’s good and perfect for my life, not them.

Take Out:

Choose you this day who you will serve.

Do your coworkers, neighbors, Hollywood stars, family, or friends know what is best for your life?  Can they tell you your perfect will?

There is only one who can.  Jesus knows what is best for you.  Do not conform to this world.  God wants to speak to you and renew your mind.  Listen to Him today.

It is not a size that God is looking for.  He wants a heart willing to serve and take care of His temple to the best of your ability.

Dessert:

Dear Jesus, I choose to serve You.  I pray that I listen to Your voice daily to stay in Your will.  Please help me to accept the body You created and to make smart decisions about what I eat and do.  Allow me to see this body as a temple for You and as a means to keep working and serving in Your name.  I pray that I put my body and my life in Your hands.
