Today’s Special is: Rest … During the Holidays? Yeah, Right!
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Lara Sadowski
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:8-10 NIV
A few weeks ago, I went to my local Hobby Lobby to buy a picture frame. Now who just goes to Hobby Lobby to get one thing? But I digress. Keep in mind, a few weeks ago was the end of September. I walked in, and you could have knocked me over with a feather. I looked to my right, and I could not believe my eyes. There… at the end of September … was … wait for it … CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS!
As Charlie Brown always says, “Good Grief!”
No wonder we always feel hurried and busy. Retail establishments have kidnapped the real reason for the season and replaced it with one-day sales. The earlier Christmas decorations are put up, the sooner we get in “busy mode.” I know I do.
But God wants so much more for us than to rush through our days – holidays or regular days. He longs for us to take a breath and REST in Him.
But how can I do that when I have to buy and wrap presents, decorate the house, host Christmas parties, send out Christmas cards, make cupcakes for the kids’ school parties, WHEW! I am tired just typing all of that.
Friend, let’s you and I do something together. And it really is not DOing. It is BEing. RESTing. Soaking up Jesus and asking Him to fill us to overflow.
Let’s ask God to guide us and show us how to truly rest in His love and grace. If we keep running around and being busy, Christmas will be gone, and we will wonder where all the time went. Instead of making that hundredth trip to the mall, sit down with a cup of coffee, shut your eyes, and ask God to still you. Read your favorite Scripture. Listen to your favorite Christmas song. Laugh with a friend on the phone.
We can do this… together. Be still and know that He is God. He is the true reason for the season.
Try not to make a to-do list that is three pages long (mine have been five!). Pick a few things to do each day during the holidays, and then you will not get so overwhelmed. Ask the Lord to direct your days and to help you put time with Him first. He will absolutely protect your time with Him. He just longs to hear your voice praying and talking to Him. What an awesome, loving God we serve!
Father, I pray that You would guide me and my sisters to rest during the holidays. Society prods us to hurry and to load our schedules with busyness, but we need You most of all, Lord. We love You so and thank You for everything. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
