This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
John 15:8 NIV
I fought against the tightness in my chest to expand my lungs. I took in one shallow breath then another. I could feel the dizziness starting and it only confirmed what I already knew. I wasn’t getting enough oxygen.
An ambulance was called.
I watched as four worried faces hovered over me, anxiously waiting for help to arrive. I fought for one breath and cracked a joke. I fought for a second one and told another joke. No one was laughing but I told the jokes anyway.
The paramedics arrived moments later and I continued my light-hearted banter with them.
The medics checked my oxygen level and quickly placed the plastic tubing on my face that sent cool air streaming into my nostrils. I felt my body relax a little more. Each breath was still a fight but I didn’t have to fight quite as hard.
On the way to the local hospital, I shared with one medic about my muscle condition. Sometimes, the muscles that support my lungs can become weak without warning.
When I was settled in at the local hospital, my mom told me that the ambulance driver had noticed my good attitude. He asked about it and my mom shared a little about my faith.
Hearing her tell the story, I realized that other people are paying attention to how I respond to my circumstances. When I respond with the peace that comes from knowing God is in control, it can be a witnessing tool.
Maybe you’re dealing with a difficult health or financial crisis of your own. Your response to your circumstances can point others to God’s loving care. Without knowing it, you may be a silent witness that encourages other people to seek God.
Think of people you come in contact with on a regular basis like your baby-sitter, your co-workers, or your doctor. How can you silently witness to them this week?
Dear God, I want my life to a silent witness to Your glory and Your goodness. When situations threaten to overwhelm me, let me place my trust and faith in You. Let my responses to my circumstances cause those around me to seek You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
