Bible Study of 1 John: Day 25
Friday, June 2, 2017
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Debbie Holt
Thank you for the truth of Your word, Lord Jesus. Help me to apply what I’ve learned in I John so that I can be a faithful follower who glorifies You in all that I say and do. Amen.
I John 5
Well, we’ve gone through I John with observation, and interpretation. Now we need to focus on application.
John’s purpose in this letter was two-fold.
His first purpose was that he wanted to warn the Church against false teachers who are trying to mislead them. He warns them to test the spirits of all so-called teachers and leaders.
- Are they truly part of the body of Christ or are they part of the antichrist spirit?
- Do they love the world?
- Read 1 John 2:15
- Have they left the fellowship of believers?
- Read 1 John 2:18-19
- Do they deny that Jesus is the Christ and that He has come in the flesh?Read 1 John 4:2
- Read 1 John 2:20-25
- Do they try to deceive the faithful with false teaching?
- Read 1 John 2:26-29
- Do they have a lifestyle of sin and unrighteousness?
- Read 1 John 3:6-10
- Do they not love (agape) the brethren?Read 1 John 4:8 and 20-21
- Read 1 John 3:10-17
- Do they love God and observe/obey His commandments?
- Read 1 John 5:2
There are many bold statements that John makes in order that his “little children” won’t be deceived!
The second purpose of this letter was to exhort the believers to hold fast to the Christian faith which they had received and to fulfill the duties of the faith:
Obedience and righteousness are the evidences of divine sonship. Love of the brethren and the lack of love of the world’s demonic system (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life) are required of those who love God. The truth is that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah, Savior) Who has come in the flesh, and He is our one and only acceptable sacrifice for sin.
Our debt has been paid and you can KNOW that you have eternal life.
So, you can see that John clearly states the attributes of believers and of nonbelievers, using strong language concerning the nonbelievers (liars, antichrists, sinners, haters of God, etc.). This reminds me of one of the strongest passages in Scripture, found in Matthew 7:20-27, spoken by Jesus Himself.
Read Matthew 7:20-27
Please don’t be hearers only of the Word of God but doers also so that you will gain “all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of....Christ Himself” (Col. 2:2).
Read 2 Peter 1:4
Those who are truly born again have been given a new nature, which gives evidence of itself … the “divine nature” (II Peter 1:4).
We didn’t fully discuss this matter in chapter 3, but 3:10 refutes a damnable heresy called Universalism.
Read 1 John 3:10
This is a key verse that disproves the world’s false doctrine that everyone in the world is a child of God. The universal Fatherhood of God and the universal brotherhood of man says that we are all (all of mankind) God’s children. The Bible does not teach that God looks upon all people as His children.
Read John 8:41-47
In John 8:41-47, Jesus clearly states that there are two families in the world – children of God and children of Satan.
In closing this study, let’s restate the characteristics of those who are children of God/born of God:
- A righteous life (2:29)
- Do not practice (habitual way of life) sin (3:9)
- Love for one another (4:7; 5:1)
- Love the heavenly Father (4:7; 5:1)
- No love for the world’s system (2:15-17)
- Hated by the world (3:13)
- Observe God’s commandments (5:2)
- Not overcome by the pressures of the world, but instead are overcomers of the world (5:4)
Those are characteristics of a believer. These characteristics give evidence of one’s true state of being – dead or alive: a child of God has passed out of death into life and a child of the devil abides in death.
Read 1 John 3:14
Are you dead or alive?
This study may have raised many questions in your heart concerning loved ones who say they belong to God but do not meet the test for those born of God. If this is so, don’t turn from what you have seen in the Word of God simply because it is too painful to believe the truth.
Don’t give false hope to those who don’t have evidence of being in the family of God! Instead, in love, tell them the truth and persistently pray for them. This truly is a matter of life and death! You know the truth, so witness to them. It may take a lifetime of showing them the way and a lifetime of loving them enough to be God’s witness to them of the transforming power of eternal life … in the here and now!!
This hasn’t just been an exercise in acquiring knowledge but a revealing of the light that will shine through you!
Read Hebrews 13:20-21
Read 2 Peter 3:16-17
May the Lord richly bless you in all that you say and do; that you may bring glory and honor to His name!!
Apply what the Lord has shown you in I John.
May Your name be praised, Lord Jesus!! Come quickly for us! Amen.
