Bible Study of 1 John: Day 24

Security in Christ

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Debbie Holt

Blessing:

Teach me to pray in Your will, Father. Let Your concerns be my concerns, and point me to Your way of righteousness so that I can glorify You in all I say and do, just like Jesus did. Amen.

Scripture Reference:

I John 5

Today’s Message:

The many religions of this world are all work oriented and very burdensome. They offer no security. One can only hope that he’s done enough to merit salvation.

Most are focused on personal needs and indifference towards others.

  • In Hindu it is taught that you should never help another person in their suffering because, their suffering is a consequence of the evil deeds committed in their past life.
  • In Islam you are taught that god is an angry god that requires you to kill all who refuse to acknowledge him.
  • Buddhism teaches that one must acquire special knowledge (somewhat like Gnosticism) and evolve to a higher plane of understanding by giving many gifts to the many gods of Buddhism.

I could go on and on, but you know the impossible burdens these religions place on people.

Not so in Christianity! The work has already been done for us through Jesus’ shed blood on the cross and His resurrection! He empowers us to do whatever He requires … and it’s all accomplished through love.

Read 1 John 5:1-3

In I John 5:1-3, we see that “His commandments are not burdensome” and we can joyfully obey. We have to realize that obedience is a family matter.

We have a loving Father, as well as brothers and sisters in Christ who are God’s children. We are commanded to love the children of God.

How do we love God’s children? When we love God and observe His commandments; we show evidence that we are born of Him and belong to His family.

Read 1 John 5:2

Read Matthew 23:4

Read Matthew 11:28-30

The burden of “religion” is a grievous one (Matt. 23:4) but the yoke of Christ is not burdensome but is light. (Matt. 11:28-30) Love lightens burdens!

What are the four things that help us to live as overcomers here on this earth?

  • Read I John 5:1-2

    1. – LOVE
  • Read I John 5:2-4

    1. – OBEDIENCE
  • Read I John 5:4-6

    1. – FAITH
  • Read I John 5:14-15

  1. – PRAYER

We’ve looked at all four this week. Love enables us to obey. Obedience has victory through faith. Faith gives us confidence in prayer. This is what a true overcomer looks like!

Read 1 John 5:13-21

From verses 13-21, what are the main points that John is trying to make?

  1. We have eternal life.
  2. God hears our prayers and grants our requests.
  3. Pray for one another.
  4. We are righteous and protected from the evil one.
  5. We are of God and the world is of Satan.
  6. We know Him Who is true…..we have no need for idols, God alone is true!

Read 1 John 3:22

Read 1 John 5:14-15

Are there any conditions that the Lord has in place for our prayers to be answered?

  1. Keep His commandments (3:22)
  2. Do the things that are pleasing in His sight (3:22)
  3. Pray according to His will (5:14-15)

John does not write “we shall have the requests” but, “we know that we have the requests” (5:15). The verb is in the present tense. We may not see the answer to a prayer immediately, but we have confidence that God has answered. This confidence is in knowing that God has heard and answered.

Robert Law said “Prayer is a mighty instrument, not for getting man’s will done in heaven, but for getting God’s will done on earth.” Enough said.

Your Turn:

Today I would like for you to read through all of I John at one sitting and notice what the Lord is saying to you personally in this letter. Write out a prayer to the Lord. It will be your love letter to the Lord!
